Nakuul Mehta is a TV actor and model who was born on January 17, 1983 in a royal family at Udaipur, Rajasthan. When he was pursing his Masters of commerce from Mumbai University, he won scholarship to study abroad. But Nakuul gave up his scholarship to purse his acting carrier. He started his acting carrier in 2004, but it was 2012 when he got the attention on small screen from his famous role of Aditya in ‘Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara.’
Nakuul Mehta, also called ‘Chocolate boy’ and ‘Milky boy’ by his co-actresses, was born on January 17, 1983 in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He was born in a royal family of Mewar. To be specific, he descends from king Prithviraj Chauhan of Rajput Chauhan dynasty of Mewar. His father Pratap Singh Mehta followed the footsteps of his great great grandfather, Laxmilal Mehta who was the military-in-chief of the Mewar region, and became a veteran of Indo-Pakistani war(1971), therefore, his family had to shift their location many times when he was a child. He changed his school more than ten times before he joined Jamnabai Narsee School, Mumbai. After completing his schooling from Jamnabai Narsee School, Mumbai, he earned his Master in Commerce from Mumbai University. He was a brilliant student, therefore, was awarded scholarship to study abroad. But even then, Nakuul was clear about his goals. He knew that he was an artist and can’t settle for an official job.
Breaking into Acting
He was not into this industry nor did he have any Bollywood background. All he had was a desire to become an actor. And even though he always wanted to be an actor, but modelling was never a part of his plans. It just happened. One day when Nakuul was standing outside his college with his friends , Satish Kaushik, who was passing from that way, spotted him. Satish decided to cast Nakuul in an upcoming Sprite(soft drink) commercial, which he himself was directing. And that’s how Nakuul got his first commercial. After that he got a chance to do ad commercial with Shah Rukh Khan for Clinic All Clear and Salman Khan for Thumbs up. Since then, he had done more than 50 commercials, but his heart was still in acting.
Nakuul said, “I always wanted to be an actor but modelling was never a part of the plan. It just happened. Satish Kaushik spotted me outside my college and decided to cast me for the first Sprite commercial, which he directed. Since then, I’ve done over 50 commercials. But, you know, as a model, people may recognise my face but they don’t really know me. It’s a different kind of recognition than what an actor receives. Also, in ads, you play a limited role.”
After a long time waiting, he made his debut with a Telgu movie ‘Abhimaani’ in 2004 but unfortunately that film never saw any light in spite of his best efforts. He said, “Funnily enough, I began my career in the Telugu film industry, with a movie called Abhimaani, which never took off. There was some problem from the Ramoji group, after which the film never ever made it to screens.”
The failure tasted bitter, but it couldn’t shake his confidence in himself. He had confidence in his ability as an actor because he had done a lot of theatre work with Mujib Khan, Om Katare and Joy Fernandez. And doing theatre either builds or destroys your confidence entirely. Because it gives you an idea of your capability as an actor; you get an immediate feedback with a live audience – it’s either good or worst – not the other way around. Luckily, the responses Nakuul received were all positives. So, he had full faith in himself and his ability.
His believe wasn’t irrational at all. He, indeed, was offered many movies, but he remained patient and waited for a script that he could trust. While waiting for the perfect script, he continued doing commercials, music videos, and theater.
Then in December of 2007, he got an invitation call from Mangatji, who had seen his ads and wanted to star him opposite his daughter, for an audition of ‘Haal E Dil.’
Nakuul went there for the audition too. He wasn’t nervous about performing as he had always been comfortable in front of the camera. But he was worried about getting the role. There were three set scenes for all the actors to try out. He did those, but Mangatji asked him to do a completely new scene where he had to improvise. He went along with it but he couldn’t understand why he had asked him to do the fourth scene until he got selected for the role.
Later, Mangatji told him that he’d liked watching him perform so much that he wanted to see what more he could get out of him.
Finally in 2008, he made his debut in Bollywood with the Anil Devgan’s movie ‘Haal E Dil.’ In 2011, Nakuul played the lead role of Pythagoras Pythagoras Sharma, son of a strict Mathematician father, who was struggling to come to terms with his father’s ambitions and his own fascination for cinema in ‘Avant Garde Pythagoras Sharma.’
In 2012 came the peak to his career as Nakuul rose to fame with the role of Aditya Harish Kumar, a young man in his 20’s with current standpoint and truly a materialistic kid with co-actress Disha Parmar, in Star Plus’ hit show ‘Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara.’
After that Nakuul took a break from TV and dedicated himself to the theatre. Though he appeared in ‘Sri Siddhartha Gauthama3(2013)’ and ‘India’s Got Talent(2015).’ He even did a web series ‘I Don’t Watch TV’ which was a satire on the Indian TV industry and also starred Bollywood film critic Rajeev Masand. The series showcase the day-to-day struggle of the Tv actors in a satirical manner. Besides Mehta, the web-series also features popular TV actors like Karan Patel, Rithvik Dhanjani, Kritika Kamra, Drashti Dhami and Karan Wahi in 2016.
Then he made his come with, perhaps the most famous show in his career till today,Star Plus’ ‘Ishqbaaz’ in 2016, and since then entertaining us with his phenomenal performance as Shivaay Singh Oberoi.
